Jiang Cheng Zi by Su Shi

Jiang Cheng Zi by Su Shi:
Written by Mr. Su Shi at year of 1075. (Song Dynasty)
Translated by Laijon Liu

Ten years living and dead have torn us apart.
I try not to remember,
But it’s hard to forget,
Your lonely grave at thousand miles away,
And nowhere I could tell you about my lonely griefs.
Even though we met, how could you recognize me
Thru this dusty face and my frosty hair.

Last night, I suddenly came home thru a serene dream,
By the small window, you were there,
Putting the make up on.
We were staring at each other, without any words,
Only our tears shed thousand streams.
Year after year I grieved for the place:
When the moon shone bright at night
Over that low pine covered small hill.

Note:
This is another one of my favorite poems of Mr. Su Shi. When he wrote this for his dead wife, Ms. Wang Fei. At that time, Mr. Su was 40 years age, during his exile caused by a court’s political conflict, and his wife had past away for 10 years. He could not go visit his wife’s grave near his home. In a Chinese old saying that our thoughts of day give us very same dreams at night. So surely he missed his wife day and night. He wrote a short note about this poem stated that this piece was a record for his dream at night.

I’m a sensitive person, coz I know every time I read this poem I feel my tears gonna come out. And I think this poem is an example how a husband should love his wife. But on another thought, he was very lucky and so was his wife, that thru this poem I truly felt I am lacking of something that they had, their pain made them alive, even drew out the tear of dead man walking.

Don't Climb Up On Me

Wang Jiang Nan
By Anonymous Tang Dynasty Poet

Don’t climb up on me,
If you climb, then you’ll be obsessed.
For I am the willow tree by the river Qu,
This person breaks, and that person climbs,
Love is just for the moment.

Note:
This poem was written about the prostitutes of Tang Dynasty.
Many scholars guessed the meaning is about a prostitute gave warning to her client, probably a young guy who really started to love her, and she feared that he would get hurt, so she wrote him this poem to bring the young guy back to reality.
In Chinese history, prostitution was a mandate policy that for the government to pleasure its traveling officials as benefit who serving their duty far away from their home under the emperor’s decision, and in public, there were many prostitution business that run by commons also, to benefit from commons. There were two types, feast maids and bed maids. The feast maids mostly served with their trained talents such as poetry, songs, instruments, dances… they served in the feast, of course they might serve more. And bed maids served by the bed. Most young girls were sold by their parents due to poverty or lustful greed, so from young age they started to live a slave life to be trained with literature and art and many other things for their master’s business, and only their master or government had right to grant them freedom. So they could not have a love life nor freedom as the pretty woman movie tells, until their old age or death arrive.

River Qu was an entertainment region near the capital.

From this poem that I can feel the affection of both lover, but the last line is a brutal truth that she has to tell from 3 aspects: her reality, his reality, and all her client’s. It is heartbroken moment to tell someone she loves, with a lie of her true feeling, but a brutal truth of reality. To her, love is never a moment thing, otherwise why she warns her lover?

Climb Le You Field

Le You Field
By Mr. Li Shang Yin (Tang Dynasty 813-858)
Translated by Laijon Liu

Toward the evening I feel no comfort,
So I drive my car to the ancient field;
The setting sun shines infinite splendor,
But it is just close to the falling dusk.

Round Fan Poem (Sad poem) 团扇诗

Round Fan Poem (Sad poem)
By Anonymous Han Dynasty Poet
Translated by Laijon Liu

A piece fancy fabric I newly made,
It’s shining and clean as frost and snow.
I cut it off to make a love fan,
Round and complete as the bright moon.
It's in your sleeve whether you come or go,
And when you move, it gives a cool breeze.
But I often fear that the autumn will arrive,
For the cold wind robs the hotness and warm;
And to abandon it, throw it into a box,
The love is stopped halfway.

Note:
There are other sources say this poem was done by a concubine of Emperor Han Cheng, who lost favor in the sight of the emperor after new maids arrived in the palace, her name were Ban Jie Shu. Some say that some other poet did it. Anyway this is a really good poem, that the poet using a love fan that made of cut fabric to describe herself, and autumn as a season that comes inevitably to her. But she did not know that the emperor being a jerk that broke her heart, and many falling for her after hearing her cry.

Chinese:

新制齐纨素,
皎洁如霜雪。
裁作合欢扇,
团圆似明月。
出入君怀袖,
动摇微风发;
常恐秋节至,
凉飚夺炎热;
弃捐荚笏中,
恩情中道绝。

By Heaven! 上邪!

By Heaven! 上邪!
By Anonymous Poet of Han Dynasty
Translated by Laijon Liu

(1st Translate)
Oh Heaven!
I shall be with you and known,
Forever without a break!
If mountains fall off their top,
River and stream dry up,
Winter thunders and summer raining snows,
Heavens and earth joints-
Then, I dare to break up with you.

(2nd Translate)
By Heaven!
I shall be with you,
Forever without end!
Till mountains fall and rivers dry,
Winter thunders and summer snows,
Heavens and earth joint-
Then, I'd break up with you.

Note:
This poem was included in a poem collection of Han Dynasty, but it might be dated older than that period. This is the most well-known Chinese love poem for over 2000 years, and this poem always on the first page of any Chinese love poem book. It is very suited for such love of two that sworn to be as long as the days of nature, a good wedding poem, also a teenage love poem that only young people do have such strong faith to believe their love at first sight will conquer everything in the world, for them to truly understand and taste the fruit of love by their pure faith, oh I shall envy them! I can only obtain a bit experience when I am strolling in the liquor store. So this poem is for whoever in love, especially young people; when we are young we can love, but getting older, we worry about marriage, and sometimes not our own.
